Portugal: Atlantic Cities & Coast
Atlantic cities, tiled streets and dramatic coastal light
Classic Portugal (9 days).
Portugal combines compact historic centres with rich maritime history and distinctive regional landscapes. Lisbon and Porto are obvious starting points, but the country’s appeal also runs through the Douro vineyards, central monasteries, the Alentejo plains, the Algarve coast and the Atlantic islands.

Culture and food along the way
Look for azulejo tilework, Manueline architecture, historic convents, fortresses and seafaring heritage. Museums and towns are easier to appreciate when matched with nearby markets and local neighbourhood walks.
Pastéis de nata, bacalhau preparations, regional cheeses, port wine and seafood are part of an exceptionally varied food culture. Local cooking is often straightforward, seasonal and closely tied to coastal or inland traditions.
Travel notes
Fast trains and intercity buses connect principal cities; local services can be slower in rural areas. Car hire can help with the Alentejo, interior valleys and some coastal drives.
Spring and early autumn suit most city and walking itineraries. Summers are busy on the Algarve; island conditions vary, and Atlantic weather may change quickly.
